The Chicago Bulls fans have been claiming that the Bulls could beat the Boston Celtics and the Celtics finally proved that the Bulls are absolutely no match for the defending champions.
5 close games that included 7 over-times have made the current series between the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics one of the greatest first round playoff series in the history of NBA basketball. Unfortunately the Bulls couldn’t control their emotions and started making some extremely questionable fouls starting in the second half of game 7, which the officials didn’t dare officiate on.
Everyone knows about the hard foul Rajon Rondo made against Brad Miller in game 5, which helped contribute to Miller missing the game tieing free-throws. Then in game 6, Kirk Hinrich grabbed onto Rondo, which prompted Rondo to throw him into the scorers table and almost get him ejected from the game.
After being reviewed, the NBA didn’t suspend Rondo or Hinrich, which seemed to anger the angry Bulls even more and prompted King Noah to violently throw Rondo to the floor and Brad Miller to attempt to literally tear the skin from Rondo’s face. The bad news about it? The officials didn’t even bother reviewing the tape. The good news? Noah and Miller ended up fouling out of the game due to their immature and highly unprofessional behavior.
While I’m on the subject, I think I’ll attack the NBA officials a little more… For some reason the officials called an obvious three-point attempt from Ben Gordon a 2 pointer even though Gordon was literally a good 1-2 feet behind the line.
On another call, Paul Pierce had the ball stolen and started to run towards the Bulls net and cut off a lay-up when Kirk Hinrich tripped over his own feet… And yet the officials called Pierce for a foul even though he was literally 3 to 5 feet away from Hinrich when he tripped.
On another play, Eddie House got taunted by the Chicago bench while shooting a three-pointer, which caused Eddie to turn towards the bench and got whistled for a technical foul while the Chicago bench should have been called for the technical instead.
On yet another occasion Kedrick Perkins got fouled by Brad Miller. In the process of grabbing his wound and turning away from Miller the official called a double-technical on both Miller and Perkins.
Despite all the hostility from the Bulls and the blatantly terrible officiating the Celtics still managed to beat the Chicago Bulls 109-99 because of just one reason… The Celtics finally played like the Celtics.
The Celtics haven’t really been playing like the Celtics for 5 out of the 7 games. The only two games that the Celtics played good Celtic defense was game 3 when they blatantly annihilated the Chicago Bulls 107 to 86 and tonight… When they won the series finale (and KG never played either game).
Not only did the Celts have great defense tonight but the bench finally came through for the first time this series as Brian Scalabrine came in early and scored 8 pts, Mikki Moore contributed 4 pts and Eddie House blasted in several much needed three-pointers to end up with 16 pts (4-4 3pt fg).
The end result is simple… The Boston Celtics are moving on to face the Orlando Magic in round 2. The Celtics may not beat the Magic since they are playing without Kevin Garnett but at least they will have a chance to win while the Chicago Bulls are headed back home to lick their wounds and start thinking about next year. Hopefully the Bulls and Celtics will face each other again next year when Garnett is healthy and we’ll see a totally different result… The Celtics will end it in 4 instead of 7.
Stats: Pierce had a silent 20 points with 9 rebounds. Rajon Rondo was obviously exhausted and still managed to contribute with 7 points, 5 rebounds and 11 assists. Kendrick Perkins scored 14 pts with 13 rebounds and Glenn Davis brought down 15 pts.
